Mailchimp is shutting down TinyLetter—here’s an alternative

TinyLetter used to be a free newsletter service that was run by Mailchimp which they had acquired in 2011, only a year after it was founded by Phil Kaplan. TinyLetter was great for many years with a large fanbase down to its free plan and ease of use. But now, it’s coming to an end.

On 30th November 2023, The Verge reported that Mailchimp would be discontinuing TinyLetter on 29th February 2024, which has left many users stranded due to such short notice and difficulties in finding a similar tool.

Why is Mailchimp shutting down TinyLetter?

Even though the news of TinyLetter being discontinued came as a surprise to its users, but most people in the industry already saw it coming.

Mailchimp has made a number of price increases lately and also shrinking down their free plan to something that’s impractical to use in a real-world scenario. That approach has been even more aggressive since its acquisition by Intuit in 2021. The decision to close TinyLetter is a step in the same direction.

All these changes have not just affect TinyLetter’s users; but have also left a dent in the pockets of existing Mailchimp customers with the pricing changes that we’ve covered in previous months.

What’s the solution?

The only option right now is to migrate to a different email marketing tool. TinyLetter will not exist anymore in February. The issue for TinyLetter users though, is that most email marketing platforms have a limited free plan and get incredibly expensive once you’re above 1,000 subscribers or so. That’s where EmailOctopus may be able to help. Like TinyLetter we’ve focussed on making a lovable marketing platform, which is easy to use.

And what’s even better? If you have fewer than than 2,500 subscribers you can use EmailOctopus for completely free, and as you scale our affordable paid plans start at only $8/month.

You can import your contacts straight into EmailOctopus as a CSV. If you’d like to retain your past emails from TinyLetter then you’ll need to download and store them to a Google Drive or similar before they terminate your account on 29th February 2024.
