Birdsong – an ethical brand on a mission to make an impact

Birdsong is a certified B Corp company that focuses on sustainability and circularity. B Corps are companies working towards sustainability and using business as a force for good. Though Birdsong started as a sustainable fashion brand, it has now expanded into other areas in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of consumer goods.

The Birdsong team is using EmailOctopus for their most recent promotional campaigns. We caught up to chat about their recent experience using email marketing to promote their activities.

Hi! Tell us a bit about Birdsong.

Birdsong is a mission-driven brand – our focus is to connect mindful consumers with ethical, sustainable brands. Our roots are in fashion, but our customers are conscious about how they choose to spend their money in all aspects of their lives. From clothes to everyday essentials to travel – they prefer to spend their money on ethical, sustainable brands. We help them by showcasing brands that focus on sustainability.

We also collaborate with sustainable brands to create bespoke, Birdsong-branded pieces; these always go down well with our audience.

Do you have a recent example of such a collaboration?

Our most recent collaboration was with Loop Mobile – one of the UK’s leading suppliers of refurbished phones and laptops. We collaborated to create a range of beautiful Birdsong-branded phone cases that our customers could buy to protect their phones while proudly showing off their allegiance to our brand.

How did this collaboration align with your brand’s ethical mission?

A shocking statistic is that worldwide, we throw away around 40 million tons of old technology, or e-waste, every year. Of this, over 150 million smartphones a year are dumped in landfills. Waste technology is such an issue that e-waste comprises 70% of our overall toxic waste, making it one of the biggest issues the world faces. Loop Mobile refurbishes phones and laptops so that customers can enjoy pre-loved tech that’s just like new, while helping to reduce the build-up of e-waste.

How did you use email marketing in this project?

Email marketing was a key strand of the overall promotion strategy for these eco-friendly phone cases. It was the first campaign we ran on EmailOctopus, and we were delighted that it was a huge success.

Why did you decide to move over to EmailOctopus?

EmailOctopus offered us flexibility on pricing that wasn’t available with our previous provider and much lower costs – that’s what tempted us to move over. We just wish we’d found EmailOctopus earlier!

Is there anything we do particularly well?

We love the user interface. EmailOctopus is really easy to navigate, and the templates on offer are more than adequate for our needs as a small business.

What will Birdsong be using email marketing for in the future? Are there any big or interesting projects you’d like to promote?

Birdsong’s mission is to inspire everyone to live more sustainably. We do that in two ways: first, by providing helpful, practical tips and advice for our community, and second, by connecting them with ethical, sustainable brands where they can be assured that their money supports their eco-conscious approach to the planet.

At the moment, we’re collaborating with some really interesting small businesses, but as we grow, we want to encourage bigger brands to commit to ethical, sustainable business practices so that we can recommend them to our audience of mindful shoppers.
